Dr. Annie Lowrie Alexander is a great example of a local Charlotte resident who has made an impact in the medical field. She was the first woman in the south to be license to practice medicine. Dr. Alexander practiced medicine in Charlotte, NC, her hometown. Medicine has changed drastically over the years since and before Dr. Alexander. During the time of Dr. Alexander, women faced many challenges trying to practice medicine. One of those challenges was college. Most medical colleges were not welcoming to any woman. However, over time this has changed and the amount of women is almost equal to the amount of men. Since more women were involved in medicine, more women started making advancements in medicine. Many women contributed different ideas, and findings to help and advance the medical field. Dr. Alexander had a big part in helping the medical field by becoming the first female in the south to be license to practice medicine. But, had none of this happened, if women were to this day not allowed to practice medicine, would the field of medicine be as advanced as it is already?
