This content knowledge project was beneficial in some ways. The main way this will benefit me, as a future elementary school teacher, was all the research I had to complete. Completing this project showed me that I am capable of doing in depth research about a specific topic. It is important for teachers to have good background knowledge of the topics they will be teaching. This way, teachers can stay at least one step ahead of their students. This project also showed me how to align topics with the NC essential standards for social studies. It is crucial that the topics we teach are aligned with the standards. Also, I remember what it is like to have to complete a research project. I think teachers sometimes forget what it is like to be a student. Completing this project reminded me of being a student and reminded me to always be clear about my instructions and requirements.
My digital museum about Dr. Alexander aligns with the fourth grade standards. Fourth grade NC essential standards are all about North Carolina. Since Dr. Annie Alexander was from NC and practiced in NC, she would be a good historical person to talk about with the students. She was also the first women to practice medicine in the south. This information could be discussed as an event that changed medicine in North Carolina.
While doing the research for this project, I learned a lot about Dr. Alexander, other women, and the field of medicine. I found it very interesting that women could be midwives but at the same time, topics of medicine were thought to be unfit for women to hear or talk about. Also, I got to see how quickly medicine came about. It is amazing to see how quickly medicine started advancing as time pasted. It was interesting to learn about the home remedies and homeopathic medicine. I have always been interesting in home remedies (because sometimes they work better!) verse modern medicine. Overall, completing this project was beneficial to me and my future as a teacher.
